Mongoose's Top Twelve Favorite Movies

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 20, 2009, 6:50 PM

... In case anyone is interested in this sort of thing. I like count down lists, and I like pictures that go with them. Hopefully you do too.

Keep in mind that this was really tough to put in "order". I really love all of the films listed-- After all, it's my top twelve.

Number twelve--
Princess Mononoke

I absolutely love this movie. It wasn't the first Ghibli film I saw, but it was the turning point where I really went, "Holy shit. This studio is awesome." The art is stunning, the plot holds together perfectly, and even with those awful anime mouths moving the same way, the characters are very natural. Plus, Billy Crudup's voice will never fail to give me shivers. Why is it so soothing? Why?

Number eleven--
Donnie Darko

I've probably watched this film about eight times, and it always makes me grin like an idiot. The acting is absolutely phenomenal from everyone, and it has the right balance of humor and darkness. Not to mention, it has one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time. Eerie, but catchy. Definitely a movie you should see if you need the full cult-classic collection.

Number ten--
The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Although I prefer the more intimate, mostly improvised stage version, this is an awesome movie. The music is goofy and fun, it's sexy in it's own strange way, and fun to watch with friends. It's also got one of my favorite Tim Curry performances because, well, he's being... Tim Curry.

Number nine--
Howl's Moving Castle

Another Miyazaki. I can't help myself. I like pretty things, okay? Now, I hate when people get upset when people like this movie but haven't read the book. I, quite honestly, look at them as separate. Though I've read the book myself and enjoyed it quite a bit, I don't think that everyone who hasn't is a 'bad fan'. Howl's Moving Castle made a fabulous movie, and people are allowed to like it. I'm all for read-the-book-first, but... Loosen up a little.

Number eight--
A Fish Called Wanda

This movie makes me happy. I adore every single actor in it. Jon Cleese is my hero, and Jamie Lee Curtis is looking damn sexy. It's hilarious, sweet, and crazy as hell, just like anything written by a Python should be.

Number seven--
The Shining

Oh god, The Shining. This is a masterpiece. Jack Nicholson's acting, the story, the... Everything. It's scary, but not just that. I will not watch a horror movie that's all spatter and gore. Who cares about that? This is a movie that was absolutely brilliant, tying horror into it. The scenes with the trike are fantastic, and I love how the house becomes a character, especially with some of the outdoor shots. It might be 'old school', but god, don't watch this thing alone.

Number six--
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

More Jack Nicholson brilliance. This is a film with so many moods to it, captured so perfectly. It's uplifting and funny at times, while heart wrenchingly sad at others, enough so to make you sick. The villain doesn't wear a mask made of human flesh, or carry a chainsaw, but she's one of the most frightening I've ever seen in a movie. I have some personal experiences with psychiatrists and nurses like her, so it hits pretty close to home. Which-- For the mood that's set in the movie-- Isn't such a bad thing.

Number five--
Hamlet

Some people really don't like Kenneth Branagh. They say you have to choose between him and Shakespeare, which I think is total bullshit. They work hand in hand PERFECTLY, and this is a wonderful movie. The sets are beautiful, the acting is great, and I adore how the villain was portrayed. Points for Kenneth! Points for William!

Number four--
Amadeus

Historically accurate? What's that? Who cares, this is awesome! For once, I forgive a movie about a historical figure for not being totally spot on with all events that occurred. And I enjoy nitpicking, believe me. I love every minute of this movie, and the giant headdresses make me snort. Tom Hulce? Powdered wigs? Opera? Yes please.

Number three--
Watchmen

This is a shitty movie. A shitty, shitty, shitty movie. I have every reason to hate it-- It completely misses the point of the graphic novel, the cgi-backed action is frighteningly stupid, there's too much awful slow motion, Malin Ackerman's Laurie has the personality of a curling iron, and the book should have never been put into movie form. But god. Oh god, I own the special edition Director's Cut. It's shiny and has two covers. I absolutely adore Watchmen. The opening sequence made me cry, everyone's acting ('Cept you, Malin) is spot on, the soundtrack is great, and the sets are total eye candy. I especially love Jeffrey Dean Morgan in this-- They could not have possibly picked a better Comedian. If Terry Gilliam, one of my favorite directors, would have gotten the deal to make the movie in the 90's, Eddie would have been played by Gary Buesy. Lol.

Number two--
Harold And Maude

This was the first movie I cried at. Absolutely my favorite love story. With music by pre-religious maniac Cat Stevens, how can something not be great? It's a very sweet movie, with more than likable characters. It's not a conventional love story, but the great ones never are. I still choke up at the end, then rewind so I can see it all over again.

Number one--
Brazil

Brazil scares me so bad I feel physically ill. I have no idea what it is about this movie, but it sets something off in me, and I have no idea what it is. When I'm done feeling really weird-- I. Love. This. Movie. Oh my. It's odd, it's dark, it's cool as hell, and it leaves everyone in this state of uneasy adrenaline. It's not really a horror movie-- It's just a strange movie. The kind of strange that I strive for in my artwork, and always come back for more of. It has some very funny moments, and appearances by Pythons that I really appreciate. The settings and costumes are... Wow. There's a scene where they're ordering dinner, and all the women at the table are wearing shoe hats. What the hell are shoe hats? I want one. I strongly, strongly, STRONGLY recommend this movie. Just... Not late at night, and please don't make grandparents sit through it. For those of you who have never heard of it-- It's about typos and plumbers and terrorists and torture artists. Wait, what?

... And that concludes that. Go watch what you haven't seen on here! Now! I'll probably come up with more in the middle of the night and curse myself for not adding them.

Edit: Aughhhh, I forgot Spirited Away, Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State, and Lolita. Dammit.
